After years of setting in a cabinet, I finally got to hang my favorite duo as drawn by one of my favorite artists, Ryan Ottley. If you look close you can see Ryan originally signed it Wya. If I manage to get KLIK BOOM: JELLO SHOTS off the ground, I’m going to have to get Ryan to do the cover.

Back in the day, when I had a 20-30 webcomic-a-day habit, one of my regular stops was Mike Maihack’s COW & BUFFALO. Like many of the webcomics, some I can’t even remember the names of (sorry), I stopped following regularly. Not out of lack of enjoyment, just time. Eventually COW & BUFFALO ended.
Last year, almost a year exactly, Mike started CLEOPATRA IN SPACE. Which I only recently discovered, and rediscovered Mike’s work. Funny how you can think, “I know this work, artist, but from where?”
Anyway, I’m glad to have reconnected with Mike’s art. I think you should give it a looksee. CLEOPATRA IN SPACE is great fun. He currently put together the first book in print. A nice digest sized comic on heavy stock with the first chapter, plus a bunch of extras including fan art and a step by step production guide. I ordered one and Mike included a nice sketch of Cleo.
Thanks Mike.

Every Hero needs a Sidekick. Right?
Without giving the story away, because I do plan on telling it one day, NanoGirl was created as her own hero but The Netizen gets caught up in his own machismo and often refers to her as his sidekick. If so, she’s Kato to his Green Hornet.
This character sketch was another by Bradley Overall that I took the liberties a while back to ink and color. I really like how he captured the cute with a little of the feisty teen. In a way she’s intended to come across at first like NetCity’s Batgirl. I think this is a good representative of that.
The life of The Netizen, and NetCity Heroes Go!, has been a rollercoaster going from company pitchman, to comic superhero, to an optioned IP for animation (all which failed awesomely) and possibly once again a comic superhero. But he started as an idea five years ago and Sergio Quijada (Oddly Normal) was the one who helped take my concept and mold him into something pretty cool, at least cool enough that a Canadian animation studio said, “Hey, that’s pretty cool. Want to pitch him?” That was quite a buzz.
That’s all secondary though. I commissioned Sergio, who like many of the artists I’ve worked with I found at Digital Webbing. He whipped up several concepts before we finalized on a Bruce Timm-esque style, Sergio gave me this.
I loved this first draft and it captured my initial description: lanky, surfer-skater type, fluid, agile. I wanted a character that would look comfortable riding waves of energy around NetCity.
Not sure what Sergio is doing now-a-days, but he did a fantastic run for Otis Frampton‘s Oddly Normal series called Oddly Normal: Family Reunion a couple years back.
I met Bradley Overall, a talented artist, over on Digital Webbing. I asked him if he’d be interested in collaborating on a The Netizen story for Digital Webbing Presents, where Klik Boom debuted. He was up for it and we were away to the races, unfortunately time and money got in the way as usual.
Definitely one of my favorite takes on The Netizen. If time and money sync up, I’m going to have to get Bradley on board for a NetCity Heroes Go! story.
Bradley has his own comic going over at Surfboards and Rayguns. Go check him out!
NetCity Heroes Gallery starts out SUPER
by Ron Earl Phillips on August 1st, 2010The new site isn’t for Klik Boom alone, no it’s going to be a mishmash of comic ideas, galleries and comic talk, as well as related topics. Since I’ve got several bits of fan art, donated and commissioned, I might as well start there.
NetCity Heroes was a comic/cartoon pitch I had a few years ago which derived from the character The Netizen, my company mascot for Netizen Media. In the last days of Netizen Media I tried to put together a webcomic with the idea of bringing customers to my hosting company website. Never took hold.
So now we have a gallery. NetCity Heroes Go!
The first piece is by Evan Shaner a super talented superhero artist. I commissioned the piece during one of his commission drives on DeviantArt. Worth every bit.
Enjoy.
Spencer Platt and Scott Godlewski added to FoKB
by Ron Earl Phillips on August 1st, 2010I found a couple of really spectacular Klik Boom pieces in my DeviantArt favs.

Scott Godlewski, artist for BOOM! Studios’ recent series CODEBREAKERS, presented me with this spectacular drawing of Buggz. Unfortunately Boom didn’t fair too well in this match up.
Spencer Platt drew the blue boys trying to dig their way out of a corn field. I’m not sure what Spencer had in mind, but it makes me want to write a story about it and get him to draw it. I really like his take on the two.
Email doesn't have to be all about SPAM …
by Ron Earl Phillips on July 31st, 2010A few weeks ago when I first started thinking about compiling this website again (for the first time), I asked the talented folks over at the Digital Webbing Letterers forum if the old logo still stood up. The logo that’s currently in the site’s masthead, which was a collaborative effort between myself, Chris Mendoza, who colored “Got Buggz”, and Ed Dukeshire tightened it up for print.
For the most part everyone thought the old logo still stood up, though a few made some good recommendations. There were even a couple offers to redo the logo. How could I say no?
Today my email brought me something special from L Jamal Walton, long time associate at DW and fellow code slinger. It’s pretty sexy and it will require a special site design, but I wanted to do that anyway.
So what do you think?
I’ve got another friend working on a version, maybe instead of being a man I’ll create a poll.
Threw together several galleries featuring art by former KB artists and friends.
It’ll probably take a while before I get the site the way I want it. Still toying with ideas.
If you’d like to contribute an image to the gallery would love to see what you would do.
Ejoy.
